About the Book

The future of music in the next half-century is thoroughly discussed in the articles of this special issue, all of which were culled from the Proceedings of the 1994 "Leaving the Twentieth Century" conference hosted by the University of Leeds, School of Music. The themes of this issue focus on the discussion of the cultural world's shift in its attention to concerns different from those which have preoccupied most of the 20th century, wherein radically different aesthetics must inevitably emerge. At the end of two decades which have seen considerable retrenchments in aesthetic outlook, there is a definite lack of confidence to envisage the future as other than an unconscious evolution of the present. It therefore seems particularly urgent, at this moment to begin to rekindle ideas about change and its necessity in art.
